WATERLINE - September, 2017

Register for the 30th annual WALPA conference! Join us October 11-13 in Spokane!

Don’t miss this chance to join your fellow lake lovers at the 30th annual WALPA conference, titled Lakes: A Valuable Public Resource. Learn about and share the latest in lake research and science and lake management at the three day conference, which will include workshops, presentations, social events, and more.

The conference kicks off Wednesday afternoon, October 11, with two hands-on workshops: one will teach participants about lake sampling instruments and methods (on a local lake!) and the other will focus on identification of invasive plant and animal species. Thursday will feature a full day of sessions and a fun poster session/auction/raffle in the evening. On Friday the conference concludes with morning sessions. Likely topics to be covered Thursday and Friday include:

  • Harmful algae
  • Volunteer monitoring
  • Unique problems in shallow lakes
  • Invasive species
  • Climate change issues

And there’s still time to apply to share your latest project or research at the conference!

Submit your abstract online HERE by September 13.

Please also spread the word and invite colleagues to share their latest projects as well.

To get in on all the fun and learning, book your room at the Hotel RL by Red Lion Spokane at the Park before September 20 for only $99/night (plus tax) for single and double occupancy rooms. Use this link CLICK HERE for the special rate or call 1-800-Red Lion and refer to WSLP1011. Questions? No availability? Contact MaryJean Jacob at 509-755-6644 or email MaryJean.Jacob@hotel-rl.com.

Also, the WALPA Board is seeking your nominations for the annual Secchi Disk Award to be presented at the conference. Let us know about a lake hero who should be honored with this year’s award. Submit your nominations by September 16 to jimgawel@uw.edu.

Get all the details, register online, and order your 2017 conference T-shirt by visiting WALPA’s conference webpage. And make sure to invite your colleagues and friends to join you in Spokane!

Eat and Drink for a Good Cause

Wednesday, Oct. 11, 6-10 pm
Globe Bar and Kitchen, Spokane

WALPA invites you to attend a new kind of fundraiser during the 2017 Conference! We will still have our poster session/raffle/auction social on Thursday evening, Oct. 12, to support student scholarships, but this year we are putting eating and drinking to good use on Wednesday evening as well. WALPA conference-goers know we usually meet up somewhere on the first night to catch up and have a beverage. Well, this year the Globe Bar and Kitchen in Spokane is donating 15% of Wednesday’s proceeds on food and drink back to WALPA to support our work to create a state-wide volunteer monitoring program! Join us Wednesday after the workshops and raise a glass for a good cause!
