    WALPA Treasury update

    by William Hobbs, WALPA treasurer

    Our mission and long-term commitment
Since 1986, the Washington Lake Protection Association (WALPA) has worked to protect Washington’s lakes through research, education, and strong advocacy. For nearly 40 years, this work has been powered by our volunteer board and committees and the steady financial support of our members.

Financial challenges and the need for change

Over the past decade, annual operating costs have remained stable at about $10,000, covering (see stacked bar graph figure):

    • Student scholarships
    • Waterline production
    • Administrative costs (web hosting, insurance, nonprofit filings)
    • Communications and outreach

Historically, the annual conference has been our primary fundraising source. But rising event costs—and our commitment to affordable registration—began to erode our annual balance, raising concerns about long-term sustainability by 2024 (see bar graph figure).

    Positive progress in 2025
In late 2024 and throughout 2025, WALPA’s board introduced several financial adjustments to restore balance. The results have been extremely encouraging. Thanks to our members and generous sponsors—who contributed ~$16,000 —WALPA now projects a reserve sufficient to support nearly two years of operating costs heading into 2026.

    • Shifted to an annual membership model  – $3,605 in new revenue
      • 89 paid members in 2025
    • Temporarily scaled back program expenses – $2,300 in savings
      • Waterline reduced to two issues
      • Scholarships limited to two students
    • Streamlined administrative operations – $515 savings
      • Obtained Google for Non-Profits suite
      • Switched to Zeffy to reduce credit card fees
    • Strong annual auction donations by sponsors and members – $6,790
      • Moved to annual sponsorship model and improved donation opportunities
      • Progress toward a dedicated, endowed scholarship fund

    Looking ahead to 2026

WALPA extends a heartfelt thank you to all members and sponsors whose support made 2025 a success. Your contributions are directly strengthening the organization’s financial stability and its ability to protect Washington’s lakes.

The board remains committed to transparency, responsible financial management, and sustaining WALPA’s mission for decades to come. As we prepare for 2026, please remember to renew your membership and consider an additional donation to WALPA. Strong, local advocates for the protection of lakes and natural resources are vitally important in today’s climate.
